Can your online copy pull audiences?
Websites, blogs, emails, newsletter, articles; are you signed up to any of these? I suspect you have a few favourites that you follow and read each day.
Why do you do it? Well, they’re relevant to you, interesting, perhaps they entertain you? It’s like having your favourite book or paper, broken down into bite-sized pieces for a bit of light relief, amusement or learning.
But I bet there are other sites and emails that pop up in your inbox or when you’re looking online, which you delete in disgust. They’re totally unwelcome; boring, inappropriate, meaningless spam.
You see, a good design will help online copy to do its job, but essentially it’s the words that have the power and influence to sell. Relevance and tone is everything. Copy that instantly connects with your customers will make the your site a place where they’ll want to spend time. And money.
You need to empathise with your audience to sell to them.
This is the most basic rule of sales, but many copywriters and marketers still fail to do it. They can’t quite grasp how to look at things from someone else’s perspective.
The issue is that I don’t think everyone is capable of doing it. Some try, but many inevitably bring the subject back to themselves without realising.
It’s like trying to confide in someone who’s bad at listening. They’re not tuned into you, but instead waiting for their moment to speak. They’d rather voice their opinions than actively listen and talk about you.
I’m sure you’ve encountered someone like that? It’s hugely frustrating; a waste of time.
Would you send a friend in need to a bad listener?
Imagine that the friend in need is your prospect, your customer; your starving crowd. You know your business is great at what it does, and will make a difference to their lives.
But would you trust a salesman without empathy to communicate with that audience? Would you trust your business to someone who cannot relate to your customer?
No. You want to speak to your customer in a language and tone they understand.
